Our covers featured indiepunk stalwarts like Sleater-Kinney and Le Tigre as well as up-and-coming comedians and musicians at the time like Sarah Silverman and M.I.A. The magazine grew slowly but surely, making a miniscule dent in the counterculture media world. Venuszine.com was the daily updated online companion to the magazine.

Meantime, I couldn’t sell my condo for anything near what I paid for it, and eventually gave in to a short sale. I applied for jobs, put my Humboldt Park apartment on the market while watching neighbors go into foreclosure, and visited New York a couple of times to scout apartments and interview for jobs. At the grand old age of 32, I’d come to feel like kind of a leader and mentor but also yearned to learn from more experienced people. What followed might have been a form of PTSD — a phase in which I actively avoided and feared listening to music and enjoying the arts for my own pleasure. During that time, I learned that my replacement also got to step into my teaching gig. As part of the deal, I remained working as the editor in chief for a couple of years, while teaching magazine writing at Columbia College in the evenings.

Former Chicago magazine columnist Steve Rhodes launched the Beachwood Reporter (beachwood reporter.com) earlier this year, and though it has yet to produce the degree of original reporting Rhodes promised, he’s doing a fine job as a media watchdog. Of similar scope, if more scattershot and boosterish in tone, is Chicagoist (chicagoist.com), part of the national family of urban “ist” Web sites that began with New York’s popular Gothamist. Online, at the three-year-old Gapers Block (gapersblock.com), Andrew Huff and crew maintain an events calendar, blog about local news, and provide original content including sports commentary, a cooking column, and analysis of local politics. Hell–with CDs, a Web site (lumpen.com), and projects like the digital culture, art, and media festivals Select and Version, it’s become a brand.

I sold the business for what seemed like a fair amount of money at the time, but in retrospect, was print-era peanuts. On the surface, I was meeting inspiring people who lived around the world, doing radio interviews about my work, and being featured in “30 under 30” lists. The more people who volunteered, the more people I managed. The more opportunities we provided for others, the more people volunteered. The more we told other people’s stories, the more people read. Did I know how to find business-minded people to help me?

At one point, one of the co-publishers said, “Amy, if and when you decide to leave Venus, please give us at least six months’ notice, so we have plenty of time to find your replacement.” As a naive people-pleaser, I did just that.

The magazine focuses on music from a woman’s perspective. In a much more sober vein, the investigative monthly Chicago Reporter (chicagoreporter.com), published by the nonprofit Community Renewal Society, does some rigorous research and data crunching on issues of race and urban poverty. Rounding out this trifecta is Stop Smiling (stopsmilingonline.com), a glossy lifestyle mag published approximately every couple of months out of a Wicker Park storefront that doubles as an event space called “The Syndicate.” Stop Smiling bills itself as “the magazine for high-minded lowlifes,” with each issue organized around a theme.

The persyn wanting equality and justice is dismissed as “the fat, ugly feminist”, for example. In the war against wimmin (and make no mistake, it is a war as real as any other) our fascist government and their state controlled media promote the ideas of fashion consciousness and an unattainable degree of physical beauty.
